Philip's achievements

2021 – Present

mRNA science

SVP and Global Head of Vaccines R&D, GSK

Leads a global team of >1,900 talented scientists and experts who help develop vaccines to get ahead of disease together. The team recently licensed a world first vaccine in the respiratory space.

2015 – 2021

COVID (SARS-CoV-2) Cross Section Science Image

VP, Chief Scientific Officer for Viral and RNA Vaccines, Pfizer Vaccine R&D

Co-led an alliance with BioNTech to develop RNA-based vaccines. This started as an influenza vaccine collaboration and in March 2020 expanded to the COVID-19 vaccine programme that resulted in the licensure of the first COVID-19 vaccine. Since then, billions of doses have been administered. Led a team that advanced a vaccine programme from discovery through global phase III trials for a respiratory disease for which no vaccine existed.

2007 – 2015

RSV Science

Held a series of scientific and senior leadership positions:

At Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics advanced research programmes on vaccines to help in the prevention of diseases including RSV, influenza, CMV, and parvovirus B19. Led the research component of the Novartis 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic response, which contributed to three licensed pandemic influenza vaccines, including a cell culture-based vaccine, in the most rapid vaccine response to a public health emergency in history. Led a BARDA-funded collaboration with Craig Venter to use synthetic biology to generate influenza vaccine seeds and deployed the technology to supply the US Pandemic Stockpile with vaccine for the 2013 H7N9 outbreak.

2000 – 2007

Adjuvant System Science Image

Instructor and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Programme in Virology, Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital Boston

With collaborators, including Dr. Stephen Harrison, determined the structures of the rotavirus neutralization antigens and entry apparatus.
