Principal Statistician, Upper Providence (USA)
How would you describe your role?
As a statistician, my primary role is associated with the design, analysis and the interpretation of clinical trials. I also have the opportunity to take part in some of GSK’s internal methodology groups. For example, as a member of the Bayesian network, I provide consultancy to statisticians utilising Bayesian methods in clinical trials and develop best practice guidance for writing documents involving Bayesian methods.
What do you like about your job?
I enjoy applying my statistical knowledge in the clinical studies I support. It is exciting when statistical ideas can help the study team make the best decision, with the ultimately objective of benefiting patients. I also enjoy collaborating with people from different disciplines and learning from them.
How would you describe the opportunities at GSK?
There are lots of great opportunities! No matter whether you choose a technical or leadership career path, you will be supported. You also have opportunity to participate in things you are interested in, such as supporting local communities, mentoring local students or helping organise a GSK conference.
What would people be surprised to hear about statisticians at GSK?
The statisticians are an integral part of GSK. Our role is not restricted to statistics. We help make critical decisions for clinical trials.
I would also say that innovations in statistical methods in drug development are highly encouraged and there are annual awards for the best statistical methods publication.
